Freedom of Information Act (2014)
The Freedom of Information Act 2014 (the Act) gives citizens the right to access records held by Government Departments and certain public bodies.
Individuals are entitled to request:-
- Any personal records, regardless of when created
- All other records created after April 21, 1998
The Act defines a record as:-
- 'any paper document, information held on computer, printouts, maps, plans, microfilm and microfiche and audio-visual material.'
Section 7 of the Act imposes a duty on public bodies to assist people who request information or access to a record other than under the Act. Where it is not possible to provide that information other than under the Act, the public body must advise the person of their right of access and must assist them in making their Freedom of Information request.
