“You have set yourselves a difficult task, but you will succeed if you persevere, and you will find a joy in overcoming obstacles. Remember, no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost. What I am looking for is not out there, it is in me.”

Helen Keller

Welcome to the Adult Guidance Handbook

The NCGE Adult Guidance Handbook is a web based resource funded by the Department of Education and Skills. It was developed by NCGE in collaboration with the Adult Educational Guidance Services in 2010. In September 2014, the NCGE Adult Guidance Handbook incorporated new additional materials and was re-launched for the adult guidance community.

This Handbook was designed with the adult guidance community in mind and adult guidance practitioners in particular. It is primarily based on a model of guidance which was formed through a Department of Education and Skills initiative with the National Centre for Guidance in Education, referred to as the Adult Educational Guidance Initiative (AEGI).  Much of the learning from AEGI is captured in this Handbook with a view to sharing it with the broader adult guidance community.

Adult guidance continues to develop, both in terms of new resources, ways of working and service delivery.  It is the intention of NCGE to continue to capture some of the excellent practice that is happening nationally and feature examples of this work in the Adult Guidance Handbook on an ongoing basis.
